How did you do it?
What are the steps you took to complete this capstone?
My main steps:
1. When I got the idea to do something with photography, I began to research photographers and other artists I know, and found a few new ones.
2. I pin-pointed things I liked and disliked about said photographers’ work.
3. I wrote down ideas for my own photographs
4. I took a few photographs
5. Learned how to use Photoshop
6. Held a dry-run photo shoot
7. Made a Flickr account for my work
8. Changed my idea for the ending presentation of my work
9. Took more photographs
10. Edited what I had
11. Held another photo shoot with new equipment
12. Edited the rest of the photos so they’re ready for the show
What obstacles did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
I ran into a few challenges here and there as far as technical difficulties with computers, cameras, and other equipment. The biggest obstacle was finding a venue for the event DeShawn and I wanted to have. We spent months searching for a nice size venue that would allow a high school student to put their photographs up. A few venues wouldn’t allow me to have music, lighting, etc. When we found the perfect location, it wasn’t available. It started to lose the initial fun in holding an event. We were forced to settle on a library space with a long list of rules and regulations. It wasn’t at all what we wanted. We decided to cancel the event a few days after we reserved it because Mr. Herman invited me to showcase my work at a event for RoughCut on First Friday.
What resources did you tap into to complete your capstone?
Mr. Herman deserves all of the credit. He allowed me to use his photo space, his tripods, his computers, backdrops, lighting, Photoshop, anything that I needed. He also helped support me and offered me feedback on my work. He was my #1 resource.
