Deeper thinking
What are you most proud of in this capstone?
I’m most proud of the fact that I stood with it. “Seniorits” lives on in each and every one of us, so being able to hold onto something for a year is pretty impressive. I’m overall just proud of the photographs that I’ve taken. I love that I overhear, “wow, that photo looks great,” or something along those lines. I’m proud of the fact that I ventured into something different for my capstone. I didn’t do anything easy that would be finished in a few months, I stuck with something that was challenging.
What did you learn from this process?
I learned so many things about equipment, editing, working with people, and myself. I learned how to set up a photo shoot and where lighting should go. Along with lighting, I learned how to drastically change the tone of my photo with it. Photoshop was something else that I learned. I am now able to fix blemishes, color correct, and give my photographs a bit of pop. Collaborating was a skill that I really strengthened in this process. I’ve figured out how to make my models comfortable and how to make them let go in order to get a great photo. I also strengthened my ability to know myself and what I want. Through working with DeShawn for a period of time, I began to learn about how I wanted people to see me and my work. There were just so many new things that I’ve learned or just gained a new perspective on.
If you could do this capstone all over again, what would you do differently?
I would most definitely have more photo shoots. I’ve learned through this process that I really feel comfortable in that setting. Just taking the time to work with people who really showed an interest in modeling would’ve been something to add. I also would have maybe had my own event, instead of being part of someone else’s.
How is SLA a better place because you were a student here?
I’m getting a serious flashback from interviews. I honestly think that SLA has benefited from me going there. No, I’m not on a sports team or part of a club, but that doesn’t mean I’m not involved. I think that my positive attitude towards school has allowed SLA to appreciate me as much as I appreciate it. I think that my work over the past four years has been thoughtful and showed effort. I think that SLA is a better place with me as a student because I have actively taken opportunities that the school and the people in it have provided. By taking those opportunities, I make up the school that is able to do things for kids like me. SLA is a better place because they have produced the person that I am and I will always credit the school with doing that.
